Acceptable Recyclables

The following are acceptable recyclables.

Residential Mixed Paper

Any paper that is written on, read from, or used for packaging, including:

  • Newspaper and inserts
  • Cardboard
  • Paperboard (Waxed paperboard is ok.), such as cereal boxes, frozen food boxes
  • Junk mail
  • Ledgers, file folders, or computer paper
  • Magazines, catalogs, phone directories
  • Paperback and hardcover books (Please limit to 20 lbs. per set out.)
Food and Beverage Containers

The following food and beverage containers:

  • Clean aluminum cans and foil
  • Steel cans
  • Empty aerosol cans, except for paint cans
  • All colors of glass bottles and jars
  • Beverage cartons (milk, juice, etc.)
Plastic containers

Any color plastic food or beverage container, except Styrofoam, may be recycled. These plastic resin code numbers are accepted:

  • 1 PETE (Polyethylene, Terephthalate): Soft drink and water bottles or food containers
  • 2 HDPE (High Density Polyethylene): Milk jugs, and detergent bottles
  • 3 V (Polyvinyl Chloride): Health and beauty aide products, cooking oil bottles, and household cleaners
  • 4 LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene): Margarine tubs and lids, and frozen dessert cups
  • 5 PP (Polypropylene): Yogurt cups, syrup bottles, deli trays, plant pots (plant pots must be rinsed free of dirt, and caps/lids)
  • 6 PS (Polystyrene): Rigid #6 plastics only, such as to-go coffee lids, disposable cups, or bakery containers (No Styrofoam)
  • 7 Other (Other resins): Microwaveable containers and narrow-neck bottles
Preparing for Recycling

Please take a moment to do the following:

  • Rinse all containers
  • Leave caps/lids on bottles and jars
  • Remove food box liners or plastic film
  • Flatten all boxes
  • Cut large cardboard boxes to less than three feet by three feet (3 ft. x 3 ft.)
  • Keep paper fibers dry
  • Keep materials loose in the U-Cart (Please do not bag recyclables in garbage bags)
Unacceptable Materials

The following materials are not acceptable:

  • Garbage bags - please keep materials loose in U-Cart
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic film, such as Ziploc bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves
  • Food packaging wrappers, such as chip bags, candy wrappers, fast food wrappers, etc.
  • Food waste/organics
  • Styrofoam (foam) products, such as egg cartons, deli or meat trays, packaging "peanuts,” etc.
  • Scrap metal
  • Lumber
  • Single-use paper products, such as paper towels, napkins, tissue paper, cups/plates
  • Plastic cutlery
  • Food-soiled boxes, such as pizza boxes, take-out containers
  • Photographs
  • Hazardous waste, such as motor oil, pesticide containers, paint, batteries, etc.
  • Toys
  • Electronic devices
  • Ceramics/mirrors
  • Gift wrap/ribbon/bows
  • Landscape waste
  • Textiles or shoes
  • Medical waste
  • Shredded paper
