The Sustainability Advisory Commission was established in 2008 (Sec. 2-91) to assist the Mayor and City Council in identifying the highest priorities for sustainable management of natural resources, particularly water and energy, for the City government and residents. The commission shall recommend goals and workable means to reach them.
The Commission's initial objective was the development of the Climate Action Plan to guide the community's efforts to reduce its emissions footprint. The Climate Action Plan includes an inventory of the sources of emissions, sets emissions reduction targets, and proposes actions to meet these emissions reduction targets.
The Commission includes seven members, who are appointed by the Mayor, and approved by the City Council. The members must be Urbana residents who have experience, expertise, or interest in the areas of sustainable environmental management.
The Sustainability Advisory Commission meets the first Tuesday of select months at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 400 South Vine Street. Meetings are open to the public.
