Matt Bain has devoted 24 years to the Urbana Police Department, beginning his career in January 2000. As a native of Champaign County, he graduated from Champaign Central High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology from MacMurray College.
Throughout his 14 years in the Patrol Division, Lieutenant Bain spent 11 years on METRO SWAT, contributing as a Sniper/Observer and later as a Sniper/Observer Team Leader. In 2014, he transitioned to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), assuming roles as the School Resource Officer and General Detective. Promoted to Sergeant in 2017, Lieutenant Bain returned to the Patrol Division.
Following a seven-month stint in patrol, Lieutenant Bain assumed the role of Sergeant of the CID for two years. In 2019, he earned another promotion, this time to Lieutenant, with an assignment to the Administrative Services Division. In March 2022, Bain took on the interim position of Deputy Chief of Police. During this tenure, he completed the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command program.
