Comprehensive Plan Map and Text Amendments

The Comprehensive Plan is a guiding document for future development, policy, and strategy for the City of Urbana. It is a "living document," which requires flexibility to address the constantly changing nature of the world.

The Comprehensive Plan touches on many aspects of City services and infrastructure, from streets and sewers to Fire service. It also addresses how the City works with other government service providers (Urbana Park District, Urbana School District, C-U Public Health District, etc.). It guides the City by providing a vision and policy direction for the next 10 to 20 years.

The Comprehensive Plan historically advises on growth. What the needs are for housing, transportation, and industrial development, and where that growth should occurc.

Occasionally, amendments are made to the maps or text of the Comprehensive Plan to update it due to changes that occur.

ASSISTANCE

It is strongly recommended and sometimes required to have a phone conversation or meeting with Planning staff (depending on the type of application) prior to an application being submitted.  This is an opportunity to find out what regulations and requirements are expected to be met and followed.  This includes what application(s) you will be required to apply and get approval for.  City staff will inform you what the process and time frame will be for getting application(s) for your intended plans reviewed and hopefully approved.

If, when you are filling out an application, you have questions or require assistance, please contact the Planning Division staff by email at Planning [at] urbanail.gov (Planning[at]UrbanaIL[dot]gov) or by calling 217.384.2440.
