The Urbana City Council approved the Mayoral appointment of Stephanie Cockrell as City Council Member for Urbana’s Ward 5. The term begins immediately and will last through April 6, 2027.
Cockrell is an educator and advocate dedicated to strengthening families, supporting youth, and expanding opportunity for residents throughout the community. She holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and is a Licensed Social Worker in Illinois, with expertise in child and family development, mental health, trauma-informed care, and community wellness.
"Dr. Cockrell has demonstrated a deep commitment to serving our community and improving the lives of Urbana residents," said Mayor Williams. "Her experience gives her a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our city. I am confident she will be a thoughtful, collaborative, and effective representative for Ward 5, and I look forward to working alongside her as we continue building a stronger Urbana for everyone."
Cockrell has a longstanding record of community engagement and service, working with local organizations and stakeholders to address issues impacting children, families, and neighborhoods throughout the community. Her appointment brings valuable expertise in community development, public service, and resident engagement to the Urbana City Council.
