Mayor DeShawn Willams was recently awarded a Leadership Award by A Cry for You. This organization is for parents that have lost a child to gun violence.
“I want to extend my sincere thanks to the A Cry for You board members and Executive Director, Ms. Bonnie Miller for this incredible recognition of the work we are doing together to be part of the solution in combating gun violence in our community,” Mayor DeShawn Williams said.
“We know there is still much work ahead, but moments like this remind me why we must keep showing up, keep pushing forward, and never lose sight of the lives we are working to protect,” The Mayor added. “This work is bigger than any one of us, and together, we can make a difference. The mission continues!”
A Cry for You is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Yvonne Miller in July 2023. Miller formed the organization after losing her son to gun violence in August 2020. In her search for healing, she connected with other mothers who had endured similar losses. Then she formed this supportive community.
A Cry for You is dedicated to offering comfort, counseling, and compassion to parents and families grieving the loss of a loved one to gun violence. The organization recognizes the deep silence and isolation that can follow the days after a funeral and repass. By cultivating a space where families can share their grief—or simply be present with others who understand—A Cry for You helps create moments of calm, connection, and mutual support.
