City of Urbana to Welcome Newest Americans During Naturalization Ceremony

While many Americans will celebrate the nation's 250th birthday with parades, fireworks, and family gatherings, 60 individuals from around the world will commemorate the occasion in a deeply personal way by officially becoming citizens of the United States.

The City of Urbana is honored to host a Naturalization Ceremony in partnership with the U.S. District Court and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 2 p.m. in the Hotel Royer Ballroom in downtown Urbana. The ceremony marks the culmination of each candidate's journey to United States citizenship and celebrates their commitment to the rights, freedoms, and responsibilities that accompany it.

Representing 25 countries, including Brazil, Canada, China, Congo (Kinshasa), Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Germany, Honduras, India, Jordan, South Korea, Libya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Philippines, Togo, United Kingdom, Vietnam, and Yemen, the candidates reflect the rich diversity that has long helped shape the United States. Their unique backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations are a testament to the enduring promise of our country and the opportunities afforded through citizenship.

The Honorable Eric I. Long, United States Magistrate Judge for the Central District of Illinois, will preside over the ceremony and administer the Oath of Allegiance, formally welcoming the candidates as the nation's newest citizens.

The ceremony will begin with the presentation of colors by Urbana Firefighters Local 1147 Honor Guard. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin will offer remarks, and Mayor DeShawn Williams will welcome the new citizens on behalf of the City of Urbana.

"For 250 years, the promise of America has challenged each generation to build a nation that is more just, more welcoming, and more united. As these individuals become United States citizens, they bring their own stories, talents, and aspirations to that continuing journey. It is a privilege for Urbana to host this ceremony and celebrate this extraordinary milestone with our nation's newest citizens," said Mayor DeShawn Williams.

The City of Urbana congratulates each of our newest Americans on this remarkable achievement.

Members of the media are welcome to attend.
