General Merchandise
The current sales tax rate on general retail sales in Urbana is 9 percent.
The rate consists of the following:
- State: 6.25 percent
- County Public Safety: .25 percent
- County School Facility: 1 percent
- Home Rule: 1.5 percent
General merchandise sales tax is remitted directly to the State of Illinois. The following is another way to look at the 9 percent rate in the City of Urbana for most sales tax purchases:
- State: 5 percent
- City: 2.5 percent (City share of State is 1 percent, and City Home Rule is 1.5 percent.)
- County: 1.5 percent (County share of State is 0.25 percent, County Public Safety is 0.25 percent, and County School Facility is 1 percent.)
Use Taxes
Use and service use taxes for Urbana are the following:
- General merchandise: 9 percent
- Food and drug: 1 percent
- Vehicle: 6.25 percent
Food and Beverage Tax
Food and beverages sold for immediate consumption are taxed at 11 percent. The City's tax on food and beverage is 2 percent.
Packaged Liquor Tax Rate
The packaged liquor tax rate is 3 percent.
Local Motor Fuel Tax
The current local motor fuel tax rate is 10 cents per gallon.
Hotel/Motel Tax
The total tax rate is 13 percent, including a 6 percent state tax and a 7 percent City tax.
An additional City tax of 4 percent is applied to boutique hotels, making the total tax rate 17 percent.
Telecommunications Tax
The total tax rate is 13 percent, including a 7 percent state tax and a 6 percent City tax.
Residential Recycling Tax
The recycling tax is billed through the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District. Rates are as follows:
- Residential dwelling: $6.25 per dwelling unit per month
- Dormitory: $3.00 times the residential capacity of the dormitory per month
- Multi-family dwelling $3.75 per dwelling unit per month

Sewer Use Fee
The Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District states that the sewer use fee is determined by multiplying the billed water usage per 100 gallons by $0.1750. (The rate applies to the billing period beginning next January 1. For more information, refer to Section 24-16 of the Urbana Code of Ordinances).
